Vampire Weekend - Ruby Soho (Rancid Cover)

It’s funny that even though Vampire Weekend have started to do kinda punkish things (using the term very loosely) on Contra, they chose to cover a Rancid song more in the vein of their older stuff. Anyways, I’ve done my fair share of Vampire Weekend defending as of late, and I feel like this cover is their way of simultaneously rewarding me for that and making the job even harder.

I would be deeply concerned if I had a kid that made videos that looked exactly like commercials for Dell Computer.

On the new Hot Chip:

I think the genius of this very weird record is that instead of making music for dancing, Hot Chip have made an album of what it feels like to be out dancing all night. It is a soundtrack to the mess of complicated and seemingly deep emotions that are all born and die on the dance floor. In other words, it’s kind of like a dude-version of Annie’s “Heartbeat.”

Recent Trends:

Although I haven’t tumbled in awhile - at least since it turned into Ask.com - I am back in full effect with some recent trends in my life:

  • I quit smoking. I’m 26 days into this new trend and I started it cold turkey. For some reason, I didn’t want to write about it earlier because I thought that would make it go away, but I’m feeling pretty good about it at this point.
  • Aerobics! Have you ever done Aerobics?! Fuck it is so much fun. The music is really great Top 40 remixes and you do a bunch of dance like moves and the time flies and your body loves you afterward. I’m definitely upping this trend to four days a week.
  • Racquetball. I am now exclusively catching up with people or taking meetings over games of racquetball. I am aware of that there is an element of douche in this premise, but at least it’s not squash (that won’t be until after law school I’m sure).
  • Trumpet. I’ve started to take weekly trumpet lessons with possibly the most eccentric man in the trumpet teaching game. In between exercises he goes all Robin Williams and start making rapid jokes. My favorite one from yesterday’s lesson was when he was teaching me about wind techniques and started trumpeting the Star Wars themed. The goal of these lessons is primarily to play some Satmcho to go along with my wicked good Armstrong voice.
  • Home improvement. When asked where my favorite place in the world is, I now have an answer. My housemate Carly and I have put the finishing touchings on a glorious breakfast nook (formerly guest bed territory). I just want to spend my whole life in it drinking coffee, tea, and chocolate milk.

This concludes another installment of recent trends.

This new version of Vampire Weekend’s Cousins is nuts.

But seriously, every time I hear that song I think of the theme to Bobby’s World.
